  questions of honesty and dishonesty on campus. Is it possible for a profes
 sor to pursue an honest living? What might it look like? Conversely\, are t
 here forms of dishonesty that can be considered ethical or necessary amid t
 he predominant cultures of academe? Salaita will consider these questions t
 hrough analysis of labor\, inequality\, alienation\, and political violence
  on and off campus.  \n\n \n\nBooks will be available for purchase from Amh
 erst Books following the event.\n\n \n\nSteven Salaita is professor of Engl
 ish and comparative literature at the American University in Cairo. His mos
 t recent books are a memoir\, An Honest Living\, and a novel\, Daughter\, S

 ecture is addresses issues connected to social\, economic\, and political j
 ustice and underpinnings in institutional racism. The lecture honors the la
 te James Baldwin\, who taught at UMass for several years. It was establishe
 d by and made possible with generous support from history department alumnu
 s Allen J. Davis '68. The lecture is co-presented by the Department of Hist
 ory\, the W. E. B. Du Bois Department of Afro-American Studies\, and the Co
 llege of Humanities and Fine Arts. \n\n \n\nThis lecture is presented in co
 njunction with the 2024-25 Feinberg Series\, What Are Universities For?\, w
 hich is exploring the historical roots of present-day political\, economic\
 , and ethical crises in higher education. It is presented by the UMass Amhe
