https://fac.umass.edu/Online/default.asp?BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::permalink=Unfolding2425&BOparam::WScontent::loadArticle::context_id=Jason Wolfe presents a body of bold abstract paintings created by unfolding the conventional form into the unknown. His process takes what has been previously learned, seen, and practiced, and allows it to take on a new identity. The result is enigmatic, challenging to the senses, and a distortion of reality.
For Wolfe, the process of artistic discovery is most fluid when he relinquishes control and dives head-first into the unknown. These are the most exciting moments for the viewer: when he forces himself to work with limited control and rely only on instinct.
His work weaves together color, texture, and form in a collage-like format, using paint applied not only with brushes, but with buckets, cups, and bowls.
"I'm trying to push myself into a realm that might make you feel unsettled," Wolfe says. "You might step away and say, 'I don't get it,' which is fine. But I think that most of the time, if you really allow yourself to sit and be still with a painting, there's something that will grab you and connect with you."
