About this Event

The Libraries, led by Cai Fischietto, Jennifer Friedman, Denise Hersey, and Lisa Di Valentino, will facilitate a session for the CTL/IDEAS facilitated discussion group on integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into student assignments.
Artificial Intelligence is becoming increasingly ubiquitous in education, for better or for worse. Students are becoming more familiar with generative AI, in particular “chatbots” such as ChatGPT and Copilot, and using it in various ways to study and complete assignments. The implications of this for academic integrity are being considered in schools everywhere, with the intention to create policies and guidelines on AI’s use in student work. This workshop is designed for instructors and instructional designers interested in incorporating AI into undergraduate assignments effectively and responsibly.
The session will begin with an overview of AI and how it works, including ethical and legal considerations (Lisa Di Valentino). Participants will then explore categories of AI tools like ChatGPT, DALL-E, and Copilot, and discuss their potential applications in education (Denise Hersey).
Next, the workshop will address principles for designing AI-integrated assignments, with the goals of furthering learning objectives, teaching students how to critically engage with AI, communicating ethical considerations, and creating clear expectations around assessment (Cai Fischietto). Examples of assignments will be presented to highlight how AI can be used to enhance learning while keeping academic integrity considerations in mind (Jennifer Friedman).
The session will conclude with an opportunity for participants to workshop their own assignment ideas and receive feedback.
