Retired US Marine Corps Lt. Col Edward H. Carpenter will speak at UMass about his time as Chief for Policy and Plans in the United Nations Mission to the South Sudan, the world’s youngest nation where civil war is again breaking out this week. The event is hosted by Human Security Lab and co-sponsored by Five Colleges International Relations Consortium, the Department of Political Science, Security in Context, and Center for Law, Justice and Societies.

Carpenter previously served for twenty years in the United States Marine Corps with deployments to Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Japan, and Indonesia. He is a graduate of the US Air War College and the Indonesian Naval Command and Staff College, and has completed graduate degrees from Harvard University , the University of Melbourne and the US Naval Postgraduate School. His new book Blue Helmet is available from Potomac Press.
